Allo stesso tempo, la miracolosa foglia della coca è anche la materia prima per la fabbricazione della cocaina, una droga che semina violenza in ogni parte del mondo per il controllo del traffico e delle immense fortune che genera. La cocaina per quattro decenni ha finanziato il terrorismo, prima quello di Sendero Luminoso in Perù, poi quello ancora più selvaggio delle FARC in Colombia. È la stessa striscia di polverina bianca che finanzia le armi che sparano su campesinos innocenti e sequestrano Ingrid Betancourt, la stessa cocaina che spara qualche secondo di felicità effimera nei cervelli bruciati dei tossicodipendenti di mezzo mondo. Una delle realtà più complesse di questo nuovo millennio si può comprendere meglio analizzandone uno ad uno i mille risvolti storici, economici, antropologici e sociali.
Basado en su experiencia personal como director del Programa Internacional de Naciones Unidas para la Fiscalización de la Droga en Bolivia, y como representante de la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito en Colombia, el autor, Sandro Calvani, dedica el presente texto al estudio del fenómeno mundial de la coca.

Wherever it became a problematic disease, it also severely affected the economy and social behaviours. The author tells the Sars story from the East Asian observatory: he lets common people and experts to represent the facts. Dr. Stefano Lazzari, a coordinator in the WHO Department for surveillance of communicable diseases has contributed the chapter on epidemiology. The book is introduced by Doctors without borders; it contains statements by Dr. Carlo Urbani who first recognized the new disease and alerted the W.H.O. and the Vietnamese government before falling himself victim of the disease.
